Population Declined by 44% from 1851 to 1901
The Narraghmore Electoral Division is 4,147 acres in size with a population in 1901 of 449 inhabitants living in 96 houses with another 7 houses uninhabited, an average of 4.7 people per houshold. Â
In 1851, 807 people lived in 152 houses, an average of 5.3 per household. The population fell by 358 residents or 42% in the next 50 years, but much of the decline happened in the 1860’s (down 146 residents) and the 1880’s (down 81 residents). The rate and pattern of decline is very similar to the adjacent ED of Moone. Â
In the 2022 Census the population of 867 was 93% more than in 1901 (Moone was up only 6%) even though the population of Co. Kildare had almost quadrupled in that time. However, there were 257 private households, 161 more than in 1901 with an average of 3.3 residents per household.Â

The Narraghmore Electoral Division contains 10 townlands and stretches north to south between Ballitore to the south and Calverstown to the north. The townlands of Battlemount, Crookstown Lower and Narraghmore Demesne witnessed an increase in population in the 1850’s before the population declined by an average of 14.6 people during the 1860’s. The exception was the townland of Narraghmore where the population increased by 30 to 99 in the 1860’s, though it declined to 63 residents by 1901.Â
The population of Ballybarney fell 53% in 50 years and only 4 residents lived in the Narraghmore Demesne in 1901 compared to 22 in 1851. This was the Waldron family of seventy two year old Richard and his 68 year old Derry born wife Anne, and two unmarried children, Caretaker Thomas aged 37 and seamstress Florence 27.Â
The development of Narraghmore as a village during this time may explain why development has been encouraged here as opposed to Moone. The 2022 population of Narraghmore Demesne is 249 and the Narraghmore townland in 375, compared to only 67 residents in total in 1901. In comparison the size of Moone’s population has hardly changed since 1901.Â

There were 449 people resident in the Narraghmore Electoral Division on Census Night March 31st 1901. The 10 townlands included in this file, with their populations in brackets are as follows:

The townlands of Battlemount, Crookstown Lower and Narraghmore Demesne witnessed an increase in population in the 1850’s before the population declined by an average of 14.6 people during the 1860’s. The exception was the townland of Narraghmore where the population increased by 30 to 99 in the 1860’s, though it declined to 63 residents by 1901.Â
The population of Ballybarney fell 53% in 50 years and only 4 residents lived in the Narraghmore Demesne in 1901 compared to 22 in 1851. This was the Waldron family of seventy two year old Richard and his 68 year old Derry born wife Anne, and two unmarried children, Caretaker Thomas aged 37 and seamstress Florence 27.Â
The development of Narraghmore as a village during this time may explain why development has been encouraged here as opposed to Moone, for the 2022 population of Narraghmore Demesne is 249 and the Narraghmore townland in 375.Â
At 96 years of age Michael Lawlor of Ballybarney was the oldest resident in the area and thereore born around 1805. He was born in Co. Kildare and was a widowed farmer in 1901 sharing his house with two sons Edward (45) and Thomas (44) as well as Edward’s wife Margaret (35). Farm servant James Myte was also present that evening. Â
Second oldest was 94 year old Michael Dowling, also of Ballybarney. He was a married farmer sharing his home with his 76 year old Hannah, and two unmarried children James (33) and Bridget (35). But also sharing the home that evening was a grandson, twenty year old John Brennan, whose parents were not present, though Brennans lived in the vicinity. Â
Ten infants were still looking forward to their first birthday when the Census was taken in 1901. They were:
- Margaret Conlan and Anne Cassidy of Ballybarney;
- Claute[?] Hendy of Battlemount;
- Thomas Lanigan of Boleybeg;
- Norah Doran and Mary A. Nolan of Crookstown Lower;
- Patrick Kelly of Killeen;
- Ellen Doyle, Patrick Brennan and Edward Scully of Liptstown Lower.Â
