The Moone Electoral Division is 4,327 acres in size with a population in 1901 of 475 inhabitants living in 111 houses with another 5 houses uninhabited, an average of 4.3 people per houshold. Â
In 1851, 817 people lived in 159 houses, an average of 5.1 per household. The population fell by 342 residents or 42% in the next 50 years, but much of the decline happened in the 1860’s (down 126 residents) and the 1880’s (down 121 residents).Â
In the 2022 Census the population of 502 was only 6% more than in 1901 even though the population of Co. Kildare had almost quadrupled in that time. However, there were 174 private households, 63 more than in 1901 with an average of 2.9 residents per household.Â

The Moone Electoral Division contains only 3Â townlands and stretches north to south to the east of Athy, with the small river Greese flowing through it. It does not have any major conurbation within it which is wy its population has not recovered since 1901 when compared to other parts of the county.Â
At 17.5 feet high, the second tallest Celtic High Cross stands within the ruins of Moone Abbey, an old monastic site established in the 5th century. The High Cross is believed to date from the 8th century. The ruins of the abbey were used to construct Moone Abbey House on site which was owned by Frederick Carroll in 1901. He was not home on census night but his 49 year old wife Mary, their 25 year old daughter Mary, visitor Margaret Palmer (possibly Power) shared the 15 room house that night with domestic servants Joan M(esh?) amd Mary Kelly.Â
Another interesting article on Moone Abbey House can also be found here.  A little further south could be found the castellated flour mill owned by miller Theobald Shackleton, who was an uncle of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) who was born nearby in Kilkea. Today Jessica Harrington trains racehorses in the area, following in the footsteps of Michael Shaughnessy who was listed as a horse trainer in the 1901 Census. Â
