Kilpatrick Electoral Division Population Changes 1841 to 1901
The Kilpatrick Electoral Division (ED) consists of 7 townlands and 5,075 acres, stretching on an east/west access with its westerly townland of Ticknevin forming part of the county border with Offaly. Ticknevin Bog is located here and on the easterly side the Ballinakill Lower and Upper include some of Timahoe bog. In between these boglands lies agricultural land that was traversed on a north/south axis by the Grand Canal. Â
Half of the population in the area resided in the largest townland of Ticknevin with 2,336 acres. 41 of the 85 occupied houses in 1901 were in Ticknevin, down from 137 in 1841.
Main Landlords in Kilpatrick in 1854
Griffith’s Valuations tells us the main landlords in this area around 1854 were the Provost and Fellows of Trinity College (Killinagh Lower and Upper, Ballinakill Lower and Upper), William Hemingway and Tom Clarendon (Ballinakill Lower) and Robert Dalyell (Kilpatrick and Ticknevin). By 1901, almost all residents seemed to have owned their own property. Â

At the end of 2024, as part of the Maynooth Studies in Local History, The Four Court Press has published an excellent book on this part of Co. Kildare that is worth purchasing. The title is “Farming and society since 1700 in the barony of Carbury, Co. Kildare, by Lesley Whiteside. Detailed farm records from the likes of the Holt family were used when researching this local study, and the book can be purchased from the publisher at this link.Â
Population Decreased by 51% between 1841 and 1901
The population decrease of 51% between 1841 and 1901 is less than surrounding areas but  similar to that endured in South Kildare. There were 137 houses in 1841 housing 809 residents, an average of 5.9 people per house. By 1901 only 85 houses were occupied, housing just 393 residents, an average of 4.6 per household.
During the famine decade, the population declined by 152 (19%) between 1841 and 1851, but only by 16 in the next decade. It then declined by 112 (17%) in the 1860’s before declining by an average of 4 people a year over the next 30 years. The 1860’s decline occurred mostly in Ticknevin and Ballinakill Upper.Â
The population decline was highest in Ballinakill Upper (down 87%) and Ballybrack (down 82%), with Kilpatrick (down 25%) the least affected.Â
