Killinthomas Electoral Division Populations Changes 1841 to 1901
The Electoral Division of Killinthomas consists of only 6 townlands and 3,707 acres, the largest being the townland of Killinthomas with 1,040 acres, much of it bog. It is a narrow electoral division sitting on a north/south axis to the north and east of Rathangan, with its southern townland traversed by the grand canal east of Rathangan. The townland of Cushaling forms part of the Kildare/Offaly border and Killinthomas townland is mostly bog. It seems the 64-acre townland of Inchanearl on the south bank of the river Slate was uninhabited from the 1840’s. The southernmost townland of Kilmoney North is separated from the townland of Kilmoney South, which is in the electoral division of Dunmurry.Â
Killinthomas is also the location of Killinthomas Wood, a spectacular 200 acre walking trail amenity carpeted with bluebells in late spring.
Main Landlords in Killinthomas in 1854
Griffith’s Valuations tell us the main landlord in this area around 1854 was the 3rd Duke of Leinster, Augustus Frederick Fitzgerald (1791-1874), who was born at Carton House, Maynooth and died there. Augustus was the nephew of the 1798 Revolutionary Leader Lord Edward Fitzgerald. Augustus was Lord Lieutenant of Kildare from 1831 to his death and was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons in Ireland from 1813 to his death also. Â
His son, the 4th Duke of Leinster, Charles William Fitzgerald (1819-1887) succeeded him and inherited 73,000 acres in Kildare and Meath. By 1901 it appears the tenants in the Killinthomas electoral division had acquired the freehold to their properties.Â

The area was sparsely populated with only 136 residents present on Census night, March 31st 1901, an average of 1 person for every 27 acres or one household for every 127 acres. Between 1841 and 1901 the population declined 67% from 414 residents to 136. The population has recovered to 385 residents in 2022 according to that census.Â
Killinthomas townland is mostly bog but its population increased 120% from 10 in 1841 to 22 in 1901, fourteen of whom were Kavanagh’s in two households.
Killyguire’s population declined by 84% from 1841 to 1901 from 64 residents in 12 households to only two families living in 2 households in 1901. Killyguire House was occupied by Mary Anne Murphy. At 25 years of aged with three children under the aged of 3, she was the young widow of Kildare County Councillor Stephen Murphy, a 50-year-old farmer and merchant, who died suddenly at home on July 31st 1900 of heart disease brought on by “fatty degeneration”.Â
