Kilberry Electoral Division is 4184 acres in size with a population in 1901 of 273 inhabitants living in 59 houses with another 16 houses uninhabited, an average of 4.6 people per household.
In 1851, 352 people lived in 62 houses, an average of 5.6 per household. The population decreased by 79 residents or 22% in the next 50 years, which is comparable to the 24% decline in nearby Churchtown, but is half the rate of decline in other nearby areas.
According to the 2022 Census, Kilberry’s population was 587 residents, up 115% on the 1901 level, a rate of increase that is significantly higher than surrounding districts. The county population has almost quadrupled in the same period. In 2022, residents lived in 208 houses with an average occupancy of 2.8 (1901 – 59 houses and 4.6 average occupancy).

The changes in Kilberry’s population did not follow the same pattern as other areas locally, thanks to the development of the peat bog in the Kilberry area. A large Peat Distillation Plant was established in Kilberry in 1849 and advertisements for turf cutters were appearing in the nation newspapers, which probably explains the 100% increase in the Kilberry population between 1851 and 1861. The failure of the Peat works in this area shortly thereafter, due to British coal becoming cheaper than Kilberry briquettes, would lead to the 45% decline in population between 1861 and 1901, but many of those who migrated may only have been present for one generation.Â

The decline of 22% in the population between 1851 and 1901 is lower than adjacent areas in Kildare, (though Churctown was similar on 24%). However, the population increased by 42% in the 1850’s due to the signifcant employment created when The Irish Peat Company set up a plant in Kilberry bog, which brought turf cutters to the area in response to job advertisements in the national newspapers. the project was shortlived and so between 1861 and 1901 the population fell 45% from 500 to 273.Â
At 80 years of age, Bridget Kavanagh in the townland of Kilberry was the oldest living resident of the area on Census night . Bridget was born around 1821 and was a widowed housekeeper who shares her home with her 30 year old unmarried niece Kate Keefe.Â
