Kerdiffstown Map 1829-1841
The townland of Kerdiffstown is divided from Johnstown and Palmerstown Demesne by the Morrel River. Kerdiffstown’s northern boundary was set by the Grand Canal where work in the Sallins area first commenced in 1756 by Thomas Omer, Engineer to the Board of the Inland Navigation. By 1759, a navigation channel two miles west of Sallins and eight miles towards Dublin was complete. Six bridges and three locks were finished by 1763, and it was first opened to passenger traffic in 1779.  Â
Kerdiffstown Griffith's Valuation Map of c.1854
By the time Griffith’s Valuation maps of 1854 were perpared, the Great Southern and Western Railway line from Dublin had reached Sallins by 1846. It crossed the Canal into Kerdiffstown’s north west corner and cut a small portion of land away from the remainder of the 703 acre townland. Kerdifftstown’s landholder at this time was Lady Charlotte Wolfe and she leased Kerdiffstown House, its gate-house, buildings and all of the townland not owned by the Grand Canal Company to Hans Hendrick. Griffith’s valued the entire townland at £915 /15s.Â
The 15th Lock on the Canal is located on the north eastern corner of the townland, and the lock house and land marked 3a in red was leased to John Parsons. James McCrievie leased the canal banks marked 2. James Carroll leased the land marked 7 from Hans Hendrick and from the Canal Company he leased the canal banks on the north side marked 6. John Daly leased the canal banks on the south side marked 4. Â
Kerdiffstown was originally associated with the Kerdiff family, and the Eustace family that subsequently married into them. Christopher Eustace of Kerdiffstown was High Sheriff in 1465, 1474, and 1475.Â
The current Kerdiffstown House was a fine country gentleman’s house first constructed c.1860 that has been subject to considerable extension and renovation in the 20th century, as its use changed. Today it is under the Peter McVerry Trust.Â
If your ancestors were born in Kerdiffstown in the 19th century, they were most likely employees of Hans Hendrick Alymer and his family as it was a working estate at that time. The exception was the Canal Lock Keeper who lived beside Lock 15 and was employed by the Grand Canal company.Â
Lock 15 Grand Canal - Lock keeper John Parsons and family
John Parsons (1820-1887) was recorded in the 1854 Griffith’s Valuations as the Lock Keeper at Lock 15 Kerdiffstown. He died at home here on December 22nd 1887 of heart disease, which he suffered for 18 months. His daughter Lizzie was present when he passed at the age of 67.Â
John married Margaret Pidgeon in Rathmines Dublin in 1841. Margaret died at home in 1896 and both she and John are buried in Bodenstown graveyard. They had 10 children, four of whom, all unmarried, were living in this Lockhouse when the 1901 Census was taken, March 31st 1901.Â
John was named Head of the household as he was the Lock keeper. His brother William was a workman to the Canal Company, while Annie and Maria are recorded as housekeepers.Â
In 1899 Lizzie married Laurence Callaghan, and they lived in Sallins. Her older sister Kate married Hugh McCreevy in Kill Church in 1876.Â
