Population Declines by 26% from 1851 to 1901

The Johnstown Electoral Division west of Castledermot is 2,136 acres in size with a population in 1901 of 227 inhabitants living in 41 houses with another 4 houses uninhabited.

In the 2022 Census, the Johnstown ED population of 198 remains 13% below that in 1901, one of the few districts not to recover to 1901 population levels despite the fact Kildare’s population has almost quadrupled in that time. However with 51 houses in 2022, there are ten more than in 1901.

The Johnstown Electoral Division containes only 5 townlands. This ED is due west of Castledermot ED, due east of Dunmanoge ED, and due north of Ballaghmoon ED.

What is noticable from the Census summaries is that the population of this area actually increased from 309 in 1851 to 349 in 1861 before beginning to fall. By 1871 it had fallen to 298 but we can see the population of Johnstown South increased from 38 in 1871 to 80 in 1881 and to 95 by 1891. The Census summary tells us new cottages were built in the 1870’s to house those now employed at the new Flour Mill.

The most prominent property in this vicinity was Prumplestown House, which was acquired by Richard Wright in 1897. He was a Justice of the Peace, a Farmer and Provision Merchant who bought this imposing property that was constructed c1856, though 1837 is stated on a plaque at the front entrance. The house was sold by the Wright family in 2019.

When searching for records of ancestors that may be from this area, genealogists should bear in mind that the registration of births, deaths and marriages, were recorded within the boundaries of the Poor Law Unions, rather than by county. In the case of Castledermot, it came within the remit of the Athy Poor Law Union, but the area of Graney which is just east of Castledermot and in Co. Kildare, was in the Baltinglass Poor Law Union. The most popular surname is Kerwin with 25, and none of the other local electoral divisions have Kerwin except for Dunmandoge with 4.

The next most common surname is Nolan (18) which is also common in this area, but the next three surnames Delahunt, Crone and Shea, with 13 each do not appear in other local electoral divisions, nor does Westlake, of which there are 9 here, including thirteen year old schoolboy George Westlake, who would later be killed in action at Neuve Chapelle, France on October 27th 1914, only 13 days after his gardener father George died of heart disease.

Census Summary 1851 to 1901,

The population declined only declined by 26% from 1851 to 1901 and over half the fall occured in the 1890’s. Thanks to the construction of a new Flour Mill in the 1870’s, there was a significant increase in the number of people living in Johnstown South from 38 to 80 in that decade.

Patrick Doyle was the oldest resident
