Dunmanoge Electoral Division is 3,578 acres in size with a population in 1901 of 223 inhabitants living in 46 houses with another 6 houses uninhabited. Â
The 1841 Census tells us prior to the famine the population was 642, which fell to 591 in the 1851 Census, a decline of 8%. In the next 50 years to 1901 the population fell 62% or 368 people.Â
In the 2022 Census, the population was 461 in 131 families, an average of 3.5 persons per family, compared to 5.78 per family in 1841. Though the population has doubled since 1901, it has nearly quadrupled in Kildare overall.Â

Dunmanoge Electoral Division (ED) is made up of 11 townlands. The River Barrow separating County Kildare and Queen’s County is its western border while the southern border of the townland of Dunmanoge is part of the Kildare/Carlow county borderlines. It is a rural community west of Castledermot.
With a population of 642 in 1841 prior to the famine, the first post famine census of 1851 recorded a population of 591, a decline of 8%. This fell every decade before only 223 residents were recorded in 1901, a decline of 62%.
 ALL 70 Residents of Knockroe gone by 1881
The townland of Knockroe, with a population of 70 in 1851 was the hardest hit, with everyone gone by 1881. It was still empty in 1881 but 9 people in two families were resident there in 1901. These were the family of Joseph Ward who moved there from the other side of the Barrow River in Queen’s County, and Patrick and Sarah Murphy. Sarah was born in England.Â
In contrast, the townlands of Jerusalem experienced hardly any depopulation, most likely because it was part of the Oak Park Estate on the Co. Carlow side of the border which was home to Colonel Henry Bruen. Edward Dempsey, a 69 year old Land Steward lived in one of two properties in the Jerusalem townland together with his three unmarried sisters. Interestingly, his landlord is “Mr. A. Kneeland of America” rather than Col. Bruen.

There must be a lot of Irish emigrants who could trace their ancestry to this part of Kildare, such was the acceleration in the population decline post the 1851 Census. 642 people lived here in the 1841 Census, and this fell to 591 post famine. Then the decline came.Â
By 1861 it was down 161 or 27% in a decade to 430. It fell another 68 or 16% to 362 by 1871, from where it further declined to 275, 258 and 223 in 1881, 1891 and 1901 respectively. All told, it lost 65% of its population in 60 years.
Housing stock declined from 103 in 1851 to 52 by 1871 and stabilized since then. to 52 in 1901, though 6 of these were unoccupied.Â
