Donore Electoral Division Population Changes 1841 to 1901
The Electoral Division of Donore consists of 10 townlands and 4,990 acres, stretching on an east west axis, bordered on the east by the river Liffey just west of Sallins, and to the west to the bog, part of which is in the townlands of Oldtowndonore and Newtowndonore.
The population declined 59% from 1,025 residents of 168 houses in 1841, an average of 6.1 per household, to 416 in 88 households in 1901 an average of 4.7 per household in 1901. Â
Like other electoral divisions in the area, the population declined in every decade between 1841 and 1901, but the steepest declines happened between 1841 and 1861. In that twenty-year period the population declined by 36%. In the famine decade of the 1840’s, the decline was an average of 21 people a year for 10 years followed by almost 16 people a year in the 1850’s. The decline averaged 7 to 8 people per year on average for the next four decades except in the 1870’s when the decline fell to only 2 people per year.Â
On the east side, the Grand Canal traverses it from Sallins on its way northwest, and the division does not have any conurbation within its borders, adjacent as it is to Sallins and Carragh. This helps explains why the population has only increased to 860 by 2022, living in 279 houses, an average household size of 3.1.
The largest townland is Oldtowndonore with 1,018 acres, a significant portion of which is bog. In 1901 it housed only 6 residents in a single household headed by unmarried farmer Michael Dawson. This was down 91% from the 65 residents in 9 households recorded there in 1841.Â
Newtowndonore was the most populated townland in 1901 with 139 residents, down 61% from 354 in 1841. The number of houses declined 42% from 55 to 32 in the same period.Â
Landenstown House was occupied on census night by Dr. Robert O’Kelly and his wife Mary, visitor Frederick Kelly, domestic staff Bridget Walkins and Mary Kavanagh, and Coachman Michael McLoughlen.
Donore House was occupied by the Morrin family, headed up by 52 year old widowed farmer Maria and accompanied by 2 daughters and three sons that evening, as well as three agricultural labourers, Patrick and Thomas Donoher, and Michael Behan as well as domestic servant Bridget Shaw.
Swords was the most common surname in Donore in 1901Â
There were 102 separate surnames recorded in the 1901 Census in the Donore Electoral Division, and Swords was the most common with 23 residents. Next was Dunne with 22, Walsh and Dempsey with 18 each, Rourke with 14, Hannon with 12, and Coffey and Cahill each with 10. Â
