Carragh Electoral Division Population Changes 1841 to 1901
The Electoral Division of Carragh (old maps spell the name with a double “rr” but today’s road signs spell the name with a single “r”) consists of 8 townlands and 3,192 acres, the largest being the townland of Castlekeely with 641 acres. Castlekeely House was one of the location used for the popular 1980’s series “The Irish R.M.” starring Peter Bowles. In 1901, the house was owned by George Mansfield of Morristown Lattin, but his land steward Andrew Blaney and his spinster sister Catherine were resident there on Census night.
Between 1841 and 1901 the population declined 46%, or 333 residents, to 394 from 727 in the pre-famine census, and over the same period the number of houses declined from 119 to 91, with 4 of the latter uninhabited in 1901. The average size of a household consequently fell from 6.1 residents per house in 1841 to 4.5 in 1901.
The steepest decline in the population occurred in the famine decade when it fell by 19% by 1851, down an average of almost 14 residents per year for 10 years. It stabilised in the 1850’s only to decline again by 13% to 517 by 1871. It stabilised once again in the 1870’s and then a second wave of population decline happened in the last two decades, as it fell by an average of almost 6 people a year for 20 years.
The adjacent townlands of Yeomanstown and Halverstown, separated by the river Liffey, were the two townlands to experience the greatest decline, the former by 77% from 78 residents to only 18, and the latter by 68% from 92 residents in 1841 to only 29 in 1901. Yeomanstown was the location of Yeomanstown House as well as one of the oldest cornmills in Ireland, situated on the river Liffey with its own mill race. Close by, on the southside of the river, lies the Mansfield estate at Morristown Lattin, which owned the mill. Further research might reveal any correlation between the economic performance of the mill and the steep decline in the local population.
The railway line traversed Gingerstown and Thomastown on its way to Newbridge, where the station first opened in 1846, so the completion of construction may have added to the population decline by 1851.
