Population Declined by 45% from 1851 to 1901
Balloghmoon Electoral Division is 2689 acres in size with a population in 1901 of 177 inhabitants living in 41 houses with another 3 houses uninhabited, an average of 4.3 people per household.
In 1851, 320 people lived in 48 houses, an average of 6.6 per household. The population decreased by 143 residents or 45% in the next 50 years, on a par with most of the surrounding areas.Â
According to the 2022 Census, Balloghmoon population was 203 residents, up 14% on the 1901 level, even though Kildare’s population has almost quadrupled since 1901. In 2022 they lived in 81 houses with an average occupancy of 2.5 (1901 – 41 houses and 4.3 average).
Population 1851 to 1901 for the 9 Townlands in Balloghmoon ED
Ballaghmoon Electoral Division is at the southern most end of Co. Kildare, situated between Castledermot and Carlow town, which are less than 12km apart. The southern borders of the townlands of Gotham, Monaclaudy Balloghmoon Castle, Knocknagee, and Gorteenvacan form the county line between Kildare and Carlow. Immediately on the Carlow side of the border stands the Oak Park Estate, Burton Hall Demesne and Ducketts Grove.
Despite its proximity to Co. Carlow, only 23 people, or 13%, of the residents on Census night had been born in Co. Carlow, whereas 72% were born in Kildare.
Though the population decline over the 50 years of 45% is similar to adjacent areas in Kildare, the pattern is different. Much of the decline in the area happened from 1881 to 1901, whereas depopulation happened in neighbouring areas in the 1850’s and 1860’s. This may have been because of the proximity of the large estates mentioned as well as the proximity of Carlow town.Â
Also, while the population of the townland of Balloghmoon fell from 34 to 10 in the 1850’s and Newtownallen declined from 79 to 58 in the same decades, others remained static, and two, Balloghmoon Castle and (up from 22 to 38) and Knocknagee (up from 77 to 86) actually enjoyed increases.Â
It would appear the decrease in population in the Balloghmoon townland to 10 in 1861 was temporary for it was back to 33 by 1871 and only fell to 27 by 1901. Ballyburn Upper’s population increased to 32 by 1871 from 21 but fell to only 6 residents by 1901.
A pattern of sharp declines can be detected in the 1870’s in Ballyburn Upper (down from 32 to 17, and then from 16 to 6 in the 1890’s). Gurteenoodean’s population fell from 58 to 43 in the 1870’s and continued to fall to only 15 by 1901. Meanwhile, Gotham’s population fell from 19 to 12 in the 1870’s, increased to 18 by 1881 but fell to only 8 by 1901. The townland of Lisbush recorded 4 residents in 1861 but none in 1851 or since.Â
As the total population of 177 is small when looking at trends, it is very likely that these unusual movements by townland are down one or two families migrating or a new family arriving.Â

Much of the decline in the area happened from 1881 to 1901, whereas depopulation happened in neighbouring areas in the 1850’s and 1860’s. This may have been because of the proximity of the large estates mentioned as well as the proximity of Carlow town.Â
Also, while the population of the townland of Balloghmoon fell from 34 to 10 in the 1850’s and Newtownallen declined from 79 to 58 in the same decades, others remained static, and two, Balloghmoon Castle and (up from 22 to 38) and Knocknagee (up from 77 to 86) actually enjoyed increases.Â
It would appear the decrease in population in the Balloghmoon townland to 10 in 1861 was temporary for it was back to 33 by 1871 and only fell to 27 by 1901. Ballyburn Upper’s population increased to 32 by 1871 from 21 but fell to only 6 residents by 1901.
A pattern of sharp declines can be detected in the 1870’s in Ballyburn Upper (down from 32 to 17, and then from 16 to 6 in the 1890’s). Gurteenoodean’s population fell from 58 to 43 in the 1870’s and continued to fall to only 15 by 1901. Meanwhile, Gotham’s population fell from 19 to 12 in the 1870’s, increased to 18 by 1881 but fell to only 8 by 1901. The townland of Lisbush recorded 4 residents in 1861 but none in 1851 or since.Â
As the total population of 177 is small when looking at trends, it is very likely that these unusual movements by townland are down one or two families migrating or a new family arriving.Â
Margaret Byrne in the townland of Knocknagee was the oldest resident in this area in 1901, at the age of 86, meaning she was born around 1815.Â
Margaret was widowed and lived at the home of her 50 year old son Patrick, a farmer, and his 40 year old wife Mary. A second son, 48 year old Thomas was also present as were three grandchildren, Thomas and Mathew, who were listed as road makers at the ages of 17 and 16 respectively, and 12 year old Margaret, who was still attending school.
Thomas Hayden of Knocknagee was the only child in the area awaiting their first birth on census night, March 31st.Â
Thomas was the son of 57 year old Farmer Edward Hayden and his 35 year old wife Annie. Thomas would have plenty of siblings to look after him that Census night, as present at home were his sisters Mary (15) Josephine (9), Ellenor (6), Christina (4) and Teresa (3) and brothers James (10) and Edward (8). Â
